Abstract

Introduction: Epidemiological studies on acute pancreatic inflammation are commonly based on international research or on older age groups. The aim of this study is to understand the factors determining the hospitalization of young Brazilians due to acute pancreatitis. Methods: This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional, observational, retrospective, quantitative, analytical, and descriptive study. Data from individuals aged 15 to 29 years were collected from the Unified Health System Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS). The absolute number of hospitalizations and average incidences were analyzed. Results: In Brazil, there were 27,731 hospitalizations of young individuals, with a subtle upward trend from 2018 to 2023. The Southeast and Northeast regions showed higher values, with the state of São Paulo having the highest frequency of records. The regions with the highest average incidences were the South, Southeast, and Midwest, and the lowest annual incidences occurred in 2018 in the Northeast and North. Female gender predominated in hospitalizations and incidence. Most were of mixed race, and only in São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul was the white population most affected. Discussion: Hospitalizations by region may be explained by differences in population size, and incidences may be linked to regional patterns of alcohol consumption. The higher occurrence in women may be due to gallstone disease and increased alcohol consumption in recent years. This consumption is trending upward in both genders, but the deleterious effects are greater in females. The data regarding race align with the country's population, as mixed-race individuals are the majority in the North, Northeast, and Midwest, surpassed by the white population only in the remaining regions. Conclusion: Young individuals were widely affected by this condition in all Brazilian regions. The findings of this study can contribute to the development of policies aimed at changing the current epidemiological situation.
