INTRODUCTION: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is an infection of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by episodes of vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It is the most common cause of mortality among children under the age of five, resulting in almost half a million deaths annually. In view of these factors, this study aims to report on an extension of health education on the correct hand washing technique for the prevention of viral gastroenteritis in children. REPORT: The Health Extension Project "Saúde (En)cena" from a public university in the state of Maranhão promoted a health education activity aimed at children aged five and six in a public school. The action was based on role-playing as an educational strategy for teaching correct hand washing. To this end, the play "Super Handwashing" was produced, along with a dynamic using black light and neon paints to simulate the hygiene process. DISCUSSION: Through the play, it was possible to teach the children in a playful and enlightening way about the correct way to wash their hands. Dramatization has contributed positively and facilitated the educational process, promoting more effective learning and giving meaning to the content covered. Furthermore, by providing an interactive and participatory approach for the students, there is an exchange of experiences and knowledge, as well as the establishment of a bond between the students and the general population. This, in turn, is fundamental to academic training and the early inclusion of health students in the community. CONCLUSION: The action effectively instructed the target audience on the technique discussed in the action. The explanation provided consolidated the objective of the initiative, highlighting the effectiveness of dramatization in transmitting health knowledge to the community.
