Abstract

Introduction: The different aspects of obstetric violence are increasingly evident in today's so-called modern society, yet both academic knowledge and that from expectant mothers are scarce. In light of this, a team of students has developed the Obstetric Violence Symposium with the aim of promoting awareness, combating this issue, and informing the healthcare community about it.

Report: The student group was divided for event planning, and during the execution, the participation of professionals who shared their knowledge about obstetric violence was enriching in every aspect.

Discussion: Obstetric violence stems from failures throughout the entire process involving healthcare systems, the expectant mother, and the baby. Over the decades, women have been increasingly subjected to the medicalization of the female body and exposed to the abusive use of unnecessary interventions during pregnancy and childbirth. Moreover, many of these interventions are not recognized as abuse and disrespect by the medical team, so the integrity of the patient in such a delicate moment is not guaranteed. To ensure that such violence doesn't occur, access to information regarding the rights and wishes of the expectant mother is essential, and it's of paramount importance for both the medical team and the expectant mother to be knowledgeable about them. Furthermore, it's worth mentioning that the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic led to the symposium being conducted online.

Conclusion: The realization of the Obstetric Violence Symposium enabled discussions among speakers from different regions of Brazil and participants of the symposium, providing the opportunity to learn about identifying obstetric violence and how to prevent it, thus ensuring the dignity of expectant mothers in all aspects. The implementation of the project was beneficial for society and crucial in the medical education process, guaranteeing knowledge about the rights of expectant mothers, the legal implications of obstetric violence, and the promotion of humanization in the realm of healthcare.
