Abstract

Introduction: Obesity, defined as Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg / m2 is a major public health issue due to its high prevalence in Brazil. This is marked by an imbalance in the intestinal microbiota, called dysbiosis and is interrelated to the presence of two bacterial phyla in the gastrointestinal tract (TGI), these being: Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Such changes are an important factor in reiterating the context in obese patients.

Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, using the PubMed, Scielo, CAPES / MEC journals in Portuguese and English. Studies from 2018 to 2021 were selected, including literature reviews, a cross-sectional descriptive study, which made the relationship between obese and non-obese patients with the microbiota, excluding studies that did not relate the intestinal microbiota with obesity and studies repeated.

Results: Several studies have portrayed obesity as the presence of intestinal dysbiosis. In obese people, intestinal dysbiosis appears to be related to increases in the phylum Firmicutes, the genus Clostridium and the species Eubacterium rectale, Clostridium coccoides, Lactobacillus reuteri, Akkermansia muciniphila, Clostridium histolyticum and Staphylococcus aureus.

Discussion: The study evaluated the relationship between changes in the microbiota and weight gain, and the increase in the prevalence of obesity, its relationship with intestinal microbiota and diet has been widely discussed. In addition, the genetic role in determining the risk of obesity has been proven in several studies.

Conclusion: It was observed that obesity was associated with a decrease in Bacteroidetes and an increase in Firmicutes in animals.
