Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Choledocholithiasis is a condition characterized by the presence of stones in the common bile duct. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with this pathology, treated at a high-complexity hospital in southern Santa Catarina between 2018 and 2022. METHODS: Medical records of 121 patients with choledocholithiasis who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) were evaluated. The data analyzed included age, sex, race, body mass index, comorbidities, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, type of treatment, and presence of periampullary diverticulum. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: It was observed that 62% of the patients were female, and the average age was 56.5 years. It was noted that 38.8% of the individuals were overweight and 27.3% were obese. Furthermore, the clinical manifestations presented by 58.7% of the individuals were abdominal pain associated with jaundice, and the most commonly used diagnostic method was magnetic resonance cholangiography (76.0%). Additionally, the treatment most frequently used was ERCP, which was performed alone in 55.4% of the patients and in combination with laparoscopic surgery in 39.7% of the cases. Finally, periampullary diverticulum was found in 9.9% of the patients. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the occurrence of choledocholithiasis in overweight and obese women; it also aligned with the literature regarding the presence of periampullary diverticula in patients with choledocholithiasis.
