Introduction: Sleep is a cyclical and vital state, although increasingly neglected by human beings in contemporary times. That said, it is up to the health professional, especially the Doctor, to understand the interactions and the correlation with their physiological properties, as well as the understanding of the complications arising from the disability in this period. Objective: To analyze and discuss recent publications on the subject, highlighting scientific milestones and systematizing the contributions to qualifying everyday medical conduct. Method: Integrative literature review, based on the publications of a thematic journal, from 2020 to 2022. Of the 324 articles, 49 were selected for reading the title and then analyzed, categorized and discussed under the prisms: “Causes of sleep disorders” and “Consequences of sleep quality”, totaling 29 studies. Result: Of the articles that address the causes of sleep disorders, attention to the volume of publications associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, as well as the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting from the consequences of confinement, the hospitalization process and the stage of grief. As for the consequences, studies positively point to the restorative neurological process, although they highlight sleep disorders with neurological degeneration, psychiatric disorders and daytime malfunction, with reduced productivity and inability to work. Conclusions: Non-restorative sleep affects the well-being and performance of individuals, and the exploration of this content in clinical practices should be part of the routine of medical professionals, and for that it requires correlations based on an integral understanding of the individual.
