Correlation between sleep disorders and mental disorders in health occupations students: a scoping review

Abstract

Introduction: The following scoping review was conducted to investigate the potential correlation between sleep disorders and mental disorders among students in the healthcare field.

Methodology: The study was guided by the PRISMA-ScR methodology, and the PICO strategy was employed to formulate the research question. Articles were obtained from the MEDLINE/PUBMED, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), and SCIELO databases using MeshTerms. These articles were then filtered based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and their data were extracted.

Results: Six articles were included, all of which were cross-sectional studies. These studies revealed higher prevalences of mental disorders, particularly depression and anxiety, associated with poorer sleep indicators among medical and nursing students.

Discussion: Despite variations in the questions and methodologies used in the studies, they all converged on surveys of healthcare students regarding sleep quality and mental disorders.

Conclusion: A significant correlation between sleep disorders and mental disorders was evident, with the severity varying according to the parameter used. However, the diversity of scales and questionnaires applied poses a challenge, highlighting the need for further research to gain a better understanding of the topic.
